What is Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride) used for?

Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride) is an antidepressant. This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SSNRIs. It is used to treat depression, anxiety, panic disorders and social phobia. By helping to restore the balance of natural substances in the brain, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, this drug may improve the patient's energy level and mood. It may also help to reduce feelings of fear, anxiety and panic attacks.

How should I use Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride)?

Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride) tablets are taken orally, with food. You should not chew or crush the tablet. Instead it should be swallowed whole without crushing or splitting. Patients are sometimes directed to take one tablet daily, with food or as directed by their physician. However, you should always consult your physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed to you and never exceed the recommended dosage. In order to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, patients should never suddenly stop taking this medication once they have started taking it. Patients should instead consult their physician, as their dosage may need to be gradually decreased.

What are the side effects of Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Efexor XR (Venlafaxine Hydrochloride) include:

  • Constipation
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Insomnia or unusual perspiration
  • Blurred vision

Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice muscle cramps, tremors, decreased sexual ability, unusual bruising, breathlessness, seizures, hallucinations, persistent nausea, severe diarrhea or twitching muscles.
