What is Amirol (Amitriptyline HCL) used for?

Amirol (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) is a type of drug known as a tricyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat the symptoms of depression, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, insomnia and various other conditions. It works by affecting chemicals in the brain that may have become unbalanced. This drug is also used to treat bedwetting in children.

How should I use Amirol (Amitriptyline HCL)?

Amirol (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) tablets should be taken orally. Patients should always consult their physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage required to treat their particular condition can be prescribed. It may take up to 4 weeks for patients to notice an improvement in their symptoms. If no improvement is noticed after 4 weeks, patients are advised to consult their physician. This drug may cause withdrawal symptoms if the patient abruptly discontinues use. Talk to your physician about how to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

What are the side effects of Amirol (Amitriptyline HCL)?

Some side effects which may occur as a result of taking Amirol (Amitriptyline Hydrochloride) include:

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Nausea, diarrhea, constipation or appetite loss
  • Headache, blurred vision or ringing sound in the ears
  • Swollen breasts occurring in both male and female patients
  • Decreased sexual ability

Consult your physician immediately if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if you notice severe pain, sudden numbness or weakness, pounding heartbeat, hallucinations, fever, seizures, uncontrolled bodily movement, persistent vomiting, urinating less than usual or unusual bruising.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have any allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
