What is Clonil (Clomipramine) used for?

Clonil (Clomipramine) is a tricyclic antidepressant prescribed to treat patients who are suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). This condition commonly manifests itself as recurring obsessive thoughts, repetitive actions, and chronic uneasiness. The medication operates by balancing levels of neurotransmitters in the brain to prevent these symptoms from occurring and interrupting everyday life. It is typically used in combination with counseling and therapy and may also be used to treat other depressive illnesses. It may also be prescribed to treat other unlisted conditions.

How should I use Clonil (Clomipramine)?

Always follow your physician's instructions for using Clonil (Clomipramine) to get the most effective results. It is typically prescribed to be administered once daily at a dosage of one 50mg tablet taken before going to sleep as it may cause drowsiness. Your particular regiment will be determined according to your response to previous treatments, the severity of your symptoms, and current health condition. It may be necessary to begin with a lower dosage that is gradually increased until the correct dosage is found according to the instructions of your physician.

When taking your dose, swallow the tablet whole and unaltered along with a large glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, but a snack is recommended if you experience any nausea or sleep disturbances. Never change the form of the tablets prior to use as this may destroy the contents or alter their effects by disrupting the timing of release. This includes chewing, crushing, splitting, or dissolving the medicine in water. You are also suggested to take the dose at the same time each day to keep a constant level of medicine in the body at all times for the most efficient results.

Regular appointments with your prescribing physician are recommended to monitor your progress and make sure you are experiencing the correct effects. After observing your response to the medication, it may be necessary to change your frequency of application or dosage until the best results occur. Ask your physician or pharmacist any questions you have about the medicine to ensure the correct usage.

Please Note

Do not begin using Clonil (Clomipramine) in patients who are allergic to tricyclic antidepressants, have had a bad reaction to similar treatments in the past, or who have manic episodes, low levels of potassium in the blood, a recent heart attack, heart defects, closed angle glaucoma, arrhythmias, decreased liver function, or are taking other MAOI medications. Also inform your physician if you are elderly, a young adult, or have a history of seizures, an enlarged prostate, psychotic illness, suicidal thoughts, chronic constipation, porphyrias, urinary retention, history of glaucoma, heart disease, or reduced liver or kidney function. These can cause complications with treatment and may require reduced dosages or frequency of administration to prevent potential health problems from occurring.

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Clonil (Clomipramine). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.

Immediately seek emergency medical care if you have an allergic or hypersensitive reaction. Common signs of a reaction include hives, swelling, skin rashes, chest pains, as well as trouble breathing or swallowing.
