What is Norinyl (Norethisterone/Mestranol) used for?

Norinyl (Norethisterone/Mestranol) is a birth control pill. It contains norethisterone, which is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, and mestranol, which is converted in the body to ethinlestradiol. This pill works by preventing ovulation and changing the mucus and cervical lining. In some cases this medication may be prescribed to women who suffer from painful or irregular periods or heavy bleeding during their period.

How should I use Norinyl (Norethisterone/Mestranol)?

Patients taking Norinyl (Norethisterone/Mestranol) tablets are normally told to start taking them on the first day of their menstrual cycle. However, this may vary slightly for some patients, and therefore, it is necessary to consult your physician before you begin taking it. This medication contains 21 active pills. It also contains 7 inactive tablets. You should take one tablet per day, for 21 consecutive days. After this, you should take one inactive tablet per day for 7 days.
