What is Relenza (Zanamivir) used for?

Relenza (Zanamivir) helps to relieve flu symptoms such as nasal congestion, coughing, a sore throat, headaches and fatigue. This drug may also be used to help prevent infection in somebody who has been exposed to the virus, such as a family member with the flu. Patients should note that as this drug works by stopping the virus from growing, it is not a replacement for the flu vaccine.

How should I use Relenza (Zanamivir)?

Relenza (Zanamivir) comes in the form of rotadisks which are inserted into the provided diskhaler and inhaled directly. Patients should follow the provided instructions on how to insert the medication into the inhaler. One blister of medication should then be punctured, after which the inhaler may be placed into the mouth and the medication inhaled. The exact dosage required varies, depending on whether the patient is using this drug to treat or prevent the flu. If you are treating flu symptoms, you may be directed to take 1 inhalation twice per day, at 12 hour intervals, for up to 5 days. However, patients should always consult their physician before taking this medication so that the correct dosage can be prescribed.

What are the side effects of Relenza (Zanamivir)?

Some side effects may occur as a result of taking Relenza (Zanamivir) such as:

  • Dizzy sensation or headaches
  • Nasal congestion or irritation
  • Nasal infection, ear infection or throat infection
  • Nausea, vomiting or loose stools
  • Coughing

Patients should consult their physician if any of these side effects persist or worsen, or if they notice any other serious side effects such as changes in mood, confusion or self harm.

Please Note

Strictly follow all instructions provided to you by your physician or pharmacist while using Relenza (Zanamivir). Optimum and safe dosage can differ based on the patient and the condition being treated.

As this medication may be unsafe for certain patients, it is essential you always inform your physician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as if you have any allergies, other illnesses, or ongoing health conditions, and if you are taking any other form of medication, supplements, or herbal products.
